My mom gave us May baskets when we were little. Following a just-previous Easter orgy of chocolate bunnies and colorful eggs a May basket was less about another riot of sugar and calories; instead it was something stylish, delicate and subtle.
As I write this it’s early April and a glance outside my window shows it’s snowing. A peek at any garden on a day like today reveals the amazing dichotomy that occurs with seasonal regularity around SW Lake County: tender green shoots poking through snow. When this happens we, of course, worry whether spring will ever arrive. Some may even shake a fist and curse climate change. The fact is spring will come. Green shoots survive. Resilience, resolution and adaptability matters.
All three of these traits help to define the Women of Distinction profiled in this issue. Toss in smarts, toughness, charity and service and you’ll see why we are so pleased to bring their stories to you. I’d also add good humor and a sense of adventure because the photo shoot directed by our editor, Stephen Neilson, at the marvelous Barrington White House was a lot of fun.
If you have yet to attend an event at The White House please do so soon. It is a super stylish, gracious venue that we are lucky to have in our midst. We’re also lucky that a first-time contributor, Aimée Mazzenga, is bringing us her sense of style. Aimée is a Barrington High School and North Park University graduate and an absolute Instagram rock star whose niche is photography and interior design.
In keeping with our women’s theme for this issue, Sue Shimkus of Lake Zurich Travel shares her perspective on what makes for a great “Girlfriends Getaway.” Just in time for Mother’s Day we also have a lovely daughter and mom story featuring Karly Kledzik and her mom, Kelli, owner of a local dance studio.
This issue is all about a profusion of color and style honoring women in our area. We hope you like it and we also appreciate hearing your thoughts and suggestions.
See you around town,
Michael Beightol, Publisher
