The Rebirth of a Country Club 3

The venerable Wynstone neighborhood, just past the corner of Miller and Rand Roads in North Barrington, has always had what some refer to as a wow factor: beautiful homes, ultra-spacious yards, winding roads surrounding the only Jack Nicklaus designed golf course in Illinois and an imposing two-story club house with a lively swimming pool across the way from one of the largest practice putting greens anywhere.

The wow factor got ramped up a lot this summer and it had nothing to do with the neighborhood, golf course or club house. In one swift move the club’s $6 million debt was wiped away by nine families when they assumed ownership of the now rebranded Club at Wynstone.

A member of the investing families, Dan Murphy, took on the role of Club Chairman. He says the group of families took over the club in a deal with equity members. Now, The Club at Wynstone is experiencing a surge in new members.

Long gone are the days when only a husband could be considered a member. Under the new regime, both spouses are members. Murphy, who is also President/CEO of Idealease, Inc., says the changes are part of an overall plan to make the club more family-friendly and inclusive.

Also gone is the men’s only terrace grill. It’s open now to all members and their families and has seen a surge in use. One other tradition has been wiped away: initiation fees for new members. It’s yet another example of a vibrant country club pledging to stay relevant with the needs of local families, Murphy says.
