The Barrington Area Chamber of Commerce (BACC) awarded $3,500 in scholarships to seven local high school students during its 39th annual “Spotlight on Barrington’s Stars Luncheon” on Wednesday, April 20 at the Marriott Northwest.
“Each year BACC awards the Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship to local high school students to help with expenses of higher education that builds future careers,” said BACC President/CEO Suzanne Corr. “The scholarship can be awarded to students attending universities, community colleges, vocational or trade school programs.”
The scholarship is named after Lauren Brown, a lovely young woman who worked for the Chamber for several years and lost her battle with cancer at the age of 29. This year’s winners of the 2016 BACC Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarship are: Griffin Bailey, (planning to pursue Exercise and Sport Science); Rachel Currie (planning to study Marketing at Loyola University); Abigail Elo (planning to pursue Entrepreneurship at the University of Dayton); Lance Gasher (planning to pursue Dance and Photography at Northern Illinois University); Katharine Mena (planning to study Finance and Entrepreneurship at Miami University of Ohio); Laura Mena (planning to study Business Management, Pre-Law at Miami University of Ohio); Justin Spiegel (planning to attend the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University).
“Lauren Brown Memorial Scholarships are funded by Chamber members through many Chamber events such as our BACC Golf Classic, our Annual Dinner and our Women’s Biz Net (WBN) activities,” Corr said.
The BACC Golf Classic will be held on Monday, July 18 at Wynstone Golf Course. Activities during the event, such as a “Chip the Duck” contest, benefit the scholarship fund. Scholarships are offered to high school students of Barrington Chamber members and their employees as well as to any Barrington High School students.
