Introducing Cathy Sue Carpenter 1

Real Wives of SW Lake County

Who lives in your home?

My husband Michael Hollinger, our children, Zachary (7) and Genevieve (2), our cat Poppy and fish Nemo.

Work outside the home? If so, where?

I’m a marketing consultant and writer, so I do most of my work at home but I do sometimes have to go to different sites for work.

Native or transplanted to the area?

Transplant.Transplant, big time!  I was born in Chicago and have lived there all my life until two years ago when we moved to Kildeer.

What’s on the floor of your car right now?

Honestly, random toys, a small zoo of stuffed animals and rogue snacks.

What’s the strangest thing in your purse right now?

Besides a few emergency diapers, wipes and everything under the sun, I’d say rocks.  My son collects them and I find them everywhere.

Favorite pamper yourself or splurge item? Where?

A bubble bath at home.

Guiltiest food pleasure?

Chocolate.  I need to eat some every day.

Title of a book on your bedside table?

Paula Kamen’s “All in My Head: An Epic Quest to Cure an Unrelenting, Totally Unreasonable, and Only Slightly Enlightening Headache.”

How would your best friend describe you?

Kind, resourceful and can never get through the day without something nutty happening.

Organization that gets most of your volunteer time?

I feel like we are all in this together, so I try to help out when I can. I volunteer in my neighborhood, community and quite a bit my son’s elementary school.  Currently, I’m searching for a mother’s charity to support with a portion of the proceeds of my new book.

Favorite date night? Where?

My husband and I need more date nights.  We are still exploring the Lake County area to find our absolute favorite.

Best thing about living in Lake County?

Besides beautiful, it’s so peaceful here.

What do you record on the DVR or watch On-Demand?

Well, daughter is obsessed with Peppa Pig, so there is a lot of that. I love Modern Family and got caught up in TWD, but rarely get a chance to watch my shows.

Favorite cocktail?

Jack Daniels rocks with a splash of water.

Where do you wish your husband would buy your next gift?

Luxe Warehouse in Kildeer. Every time I walk into that store I find such great clothes. Marcy always remembers everything I’ve ever bought and knows what I like. If Michael went there for a gift, Marcy would be able to show him exactly what I would like.

Favorite gadget or gizmo?

My iPhone, it does everything, text, email, photos, videos, apps. I even wrote my book on it.

Which celebrity do you get mistaken for?

I had quite a few people tell me that Katherine McPhee from American Idol looked like me.  Which was nice to hear.

What would you name the autobiography of your life?

The 85 Lives of Cathy Sue.

What is one thing not many people know about you?

I’m an introverted extrovert. As much as I love people, I need time alone.  No one believes me I when tell them this.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why?

My mom.  I’m always amazed at all that my mom managed to accomplish. I often ask her how she did it all.

Unique or interesting fact about yourself or your college years?

I’ve suffered all my life from an autoimmune disease called Alopecia Areata. It causes the body to attack hair follicles. It’s not life-threatening, but it’s been life altering. As a child and teen, it was pretty rough. Losing my hair in varying degrees has had a huge impact on all aspects of my life. It’s not always noticeable but something I deal with daily.

What outdoor activities do you like to do?

My kids and I love water. In summer, we head to the pool and beach as much as possible.

What’s the #1 most played song on your iPod?

It’s always the kids’ music.  Currently, they are into a lot of Alvin and the Chipmunks songs.

What is one of your
favorite quotes?

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined. –Henry David Thoreau
