American Sale in Lake Zurich

American Sale of  Lake Zurich opened in 2014 in the Deer Path Court Shopping Center on Rand Road. Walking into the location feels a bit like a vacation dream come to life with its amazing in-ground pool display surrounded by a beautiful brick and travertine tile patio. The store has an impressive selection of patio furniture, fire pits, hot tubs, above-ground swimming pools, grills, billiard tables, backyard play-sets, seasonally available Halloween costumes and Chicagolands largest selection of the finest artificial Christmas trees and holiday décor.

The company, currently run by three generations of the Jones family, started in 1959, when Bob Jones Sr. and his wife, Dolores, opened their first store selling toys. Bob was a salesman from the beginning—his career started when he began selling soda pop to graveyard workers at the Evergreen Park cemetery at seven years old. As a young entrepreneur he also sold flags, opened a Hot Dog stand and continued trying new things to enhance his businesses. Within two years of opening, Bob decided to expand for the holiday season and added Christmas merchandise. Soon after, Pool and Patio departments were added for summer season and, with that, started todays American Sale.

Fifty-six years later, with three generations of family working together, American Sale is now known as the one of the nations best home recreation and holiday stores with nine locations locally, and internationally available through online service. Family has always been a mainstay of the business and now includes Bob Jones Sr., Bob Jones Jr. and sister Sandra, as well as Bob Jr.’s daughter Erica. Bob Jones Jr. has been working in the stores since he was 7 years old, and continued throughout his high school and his college career. Both Bob Jr. and Sandra began working with the business after college.

For many families, working together can be difficult; for the Jones family it simply just works. Bob Jones Sr., Bob Jr. and Sandra have worked together more than 30 years. They have traveled the world together, meeting vendors and researching the best products to carry and sell. They feel it has been an honor to work with so many wonderful employees and thousands of customers worldwide. Their secret to making their family business a success includes everyone knowing their roll; they all enjoy working hard, sharing responsibility and contributing to their family business.

“(It’s) Easier said than done, but we were all raised with this example. American Sale doesn’t have a “slow season” and yet the family still enjoys the holidays together. Bob Jr. said the Fourth of July has become his favorite time of year. By then, the big summer sales rush is waning and there still a lot of summer left for him to enjoy. His ability to enjoy the busiest days as much as any other day helps with daily challenges in the retail world. He likes to remember the quote, “Don’t strive for or expect an easy life.”

“Challenges are the spice of life that adds character, perspective and contrast,” he says. “They allow one to recognize what is truly important.”

It is very much apparent that the Jones family, with their ongoing success and company growth, continues to recognize what is truly important as each generation strives to strengthen not only the business but their family bond, integrity and dedication to complete customer satisfaction.
